INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION: Remote

DATES OF INTERNSHIP: January – April 2021

HOURS PER WEEK: Part-Time: 10 hours/week

Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Training and supervisory support
  • Access to Mercy Corps online tools
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this project

Intern responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Laptop for working remotely
  • Accommodation, travel and living expenses

We recognize climate change is a key driver of the complex and interrelated shocks and stresses that communities currently face. Mercy Corps builds climate resilience through strategies that reduce poverty, increase food security, enhance social cohesion, strengthen governance, and promote low carbon pathways for development. We call this approach Climate Resilient Development (CRD).

Within the Environment team, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) arm of the Environment team works with ensuring access to safe water, adequate sanitation and hygiene education. Improving access to WASH services can improve health, life expectancy, student learning, gender equality, and other important issues of international development.[3] This can reduce illness and death, and also affect poverty reduction and socio-economic development.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Work with humanitarian contexts; Learn to work with multiple faceted contexts to build positive and constructive outcomes
  • Identify and develop innovative approaches and solution to solve old problems
  • Develop/enhance skills for team work and remote collaboration
  • Integrate various entities and fields of expertise to build integrated strategies and approaches that lead to sustainable programming

DELIVERABLES:

  • Create a mapping & tracking database of WASH programs: status, funding level, key program interventions, needs for technical support and capacity building, summary of their WASH strategies and update it regularly
  • Search for WASH programmatic case studies, lessons learned and innovative projects, and participate to elaboration of best practices documents
  • Identify and highlight key features of programs that have integrated WASH, with Resilience, Climate change and Environmental, Energy programming components
  • Help with design and layout of technical documents
  • Screen the Workplace for WASH-related postings, and manage the WASH postings on Workplace
  • Participate in preparation of online events like webinars and online trainings and workshops
  • Participate in development and layout of various technical resource documents for release to the field
  • Participate in preparation and publication of WASH newsletter

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • University degree in progress or recently completed (within 1 year) in relevant discipline
  • Strong willingness and capacity to identify weaknesses and set premises for constructive and sustainable change
  • True humanitarian at heart
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Remote work savvy
  • Interest or background or experience in any of the fields of expertise such as water sanitation, hygiene, behavior change, mass media communication
