Job Overview:The vision of the IRC Seattle Youth Program is that youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds will have the skills and resources necessary to pursue a future of opportunity. The Youth Program works towards this vision by providing educational and enrichment opportunities to help school-aged youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds catch up on missed education, adjust to their new school, accelerate English language development, and build positive relationships in the school and community. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent remote and hybrid learning has greatly impacted student learning, and disproportionately for newcomer, multilingual students. To decrease summer and COVID-related learning loss, IRC is offering an expanded summer learning program specifically for newcomer students. This position is a short-term 2 month, part-time position from mid/late June through mid/late August 2021, designed to support the expansion of IRC’s newcomer summer learning program.

IRC is hiring four Summer Learning Program Teaching Assistants, one that will be fully virtual and support IRC virtual Summer Reading Program, and three that will be in-person supporting lead educators by providing small-group, 1:1, and classroom assistance for IRC’s summer learning programs in South King County.

Major Responsibilities:

In-Person Summer Learning Program Teaching Assistant

  • Support IRC’s lead Educators implementing IRC’s Newcomer Summer Learning Program for elementary age students, Monday – Thursday from 8:00am – 1:00pm.
  • Facilitate small-group activities and lessons with 3-5 students including math, literacy, art, recreation, and social and emotional learning.
  • Provide 1:1 support to students needing more individualized instruction.
  • Support lead Educators with attendance, classroom management, distribution and collection of learning materials, and COVID-related health and sanitation procedures.
  • Support IRC’s summer enrichment programs including recreation and science camps; leading recreation activities and supporting lead instructions with science lessons and activities.
  • Create safe and healing learning spaces and build supportive relationships with newcomer students utilizing a trauma informed approach in order to support students’ academic and social and emotional development.
  • Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency, including COVID Health and Safety guidelines for in-person instruction.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Virtual Summer Reading Program Teaching Assistant

  • Conduct family outreach and enroll students in the virtual summer reading program.
  • Provide training and technical support to parents/caregivers and students for successful use of the virtual summer reading platform.
  • Facilitate two weekly virtual “reading hours” utilizing IRC’s summer reading program books and activities.
  • Track students reading time and progress on the online platform; create reports of student’s reading and conduct parent/caregiver follow up calls to encourage ongoing summer reading.
  • Create safe and healing learning spaces and build supportive relationships with newcomer students utilizing a trauma informed approach in order to support students’ academic and social and emotional development.
  • Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency, including COVID Health and Safety guidelines for in-person instruction.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience or desire to work with elementary age students; experience in tutoring or academic enrichment programs desired (i.e. summer or day camps, youth groups, after school programs, sports/recreation programs or clubs).
  • Experience working with multi-lingual students.
  • English proficiency, both spoken and written, and proficiency in relevant language(s) preferred (i.e., Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Ukrainian, Somali, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Burmese)
  • Cross cultural experience; connection and experience working with communities from refugee and/or immigrant backgrounds.
  • Experience and proficiency utilizing online platforms such as Zoom and Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Committed to anti-racism and continual learning and growth.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing program and student needs.
  • Team player willing to provide support to other staff and students.

Working Environment:

  • The in-person Teaching Assistants will work in a classroom environment, working at elementary schools in Tukwila and Auburn. Some remote work required, i.e. reviewing lesson plans and preparing learning activities. Access to reliable transportation to travel daily to Tukwila or Auburn. Typical schedule will be Monday -Thursday 8:00 – 1:00, hours may vary in August.
  • The virtual Teaching Assistant will be 100% remote, working virtually through Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook. Access to reliable highspeed internet connection required. Typical schedule will be Monday -Thursday 12:00 – 5:00. Hours are flexible and may vary.
