Eater is looking for someone smart, savvy, and food-aware to join us as the (part-time) editor of Eater Voices, our new section of op-eds, essays, and first-person stories

* Scout, bring in, edit, and build op-eds and first-person essays from both writers and non-writers (including as-told-to’s)

* Work closely with writers to ensure clean copy, clear theses, and coherent narratives

* Develop headlines, deks, and social media copy for each op-ed or essay

* Prioritize the amplification of voices with a diversity of experience, identity, and perspective

* Lots of love for personal essay/first-person storytelling as a form

* The ability to sift out a needle from a haystack of pitches, as well as to independently develop sharp, coherent essays both writer-first (i.e. here’s an interesting person, what story should they tell?), and story-first (i.e. here’s an interesting topic/perspective, who should we assign to explore it?)

* Awareness of (and, ideally, access to) the people of the food world, from big-name chefs to activists to diners to food writers to non-food writers to big celebrities to food-world folks in underrepresented roles

* Meticulous editorial skill, great freelancer bedside manner, and an intuitive understanding of how readers find and share stories online

* Comfort working independently, and good digital communication habits (mostly email and Slack)

* The right candidate can live anywhere and do the work of this position any time of day/night, but must be able to be available (video-conf or in person) for a weekly hour-long edit planning meeting, and occasional (but very infrequent) additional meetings.
