Department Summary: As stewards of sponsored funds for the Mass General Brigham entities, Research Management (RM) is committed to identifying and adhering to best practices in grants and contracts administration and upholding the highest standards of integrity and fiduciary responsibility. RM seeks to proactively address the administrative demands on investigators by providing exceptional customer service to our distinguished research community and collaborators in their pioneering efforts in science and medicine.

Specific functions that RM facilitates include:

  • Information and resources to support research efforts with collaborators and sponsors
  • Preparing and submitting a proposal
  • Managing and monitoring an award
  • Negotiating and executing agreements, foundation awards, incoming contracts and outgoing subcontracts
  • Billing, accounting and finial reporting for a grant or contract

Project responsibilities: The intern will learn the sponsored research contracting process from draft to execution, including federal subawards, data use agreements, and foundation awards.

The intern will also be responsible for researching a current issue in research administration that affects contracting. The topic will be determined according to the needs of the team and the interest area of the intern- the potential topics are clinical trial site negotiations, human subjects data use and open access to research results. The intern’s work product should include relevant case law, articles and summaries of applicable regulations that Research Administration can utilize as a guide when handling these issue as they arise in contract negotiations.


Required skills
: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong organization skills. Ability to perform legal research and write memoranda on various topics related to research contracting.

Graduate Student

Preferred major or course of study: law or MPH

Hours per week and schedule: 40 hours/week; 9-5:30 M-F
