The Communications Manager works collaboratively with the Board of Directors and Ruff Start Rescue’s management team to help create strategies that enhance organizational visibility and build Ruff Start Rescue’s brand, including defining Ruff Start Rescue’s core messaging, brand identity and developing an organization-wide communications strategy.

The Communications Manager, leading a team of highly dedicated and skilled paid and volunteer staff members, is responsible for articulating that vision and mission to the general public using direct strategies and tactics in public relations, direct marketing, social media and other online marketing tools to engage Ruff Start Rescue’s audiences.

Primary Responsibilities:

– Collaborate with Board of Directors and Ruff Start Rescue’s management team to develop communications plans that broaden program reach and deepen impact

– Manages internal and external marketing communications functions to include development of consistent messaging and organizational image promotion (branding)

– Identify significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support Ruff Start Rescue’s work, and create and implement plans to implement them

– Serve as executive editor for the organization’s website and newsletters

– Oversee organizational responses to inquiries about Ruff Start Rescue’s programs

– Collaborate with paid and volunteer staff to create, manage, oversee and evaluate all marketing communications activities, including the governance of key messages, tactics, budget, timing and measurement

– Responsible for website design, social media content and analysis; coordinates with key staff to ensure content is appropriate and up-to-date, with hands-on experience using HTML, CSS and Facebook, and a working knowledge of how content management systems work

Significant communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations

– A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes

– Ability to coach and support senior leaders as spokespersons

– Superior verbal and written communication skills

– Strong experience writing and message development

– Demonstrated success in building and maintaining high performing teams

– Demonstrated expertise in lead generation (direct mail, email, web, events/tradeshows)
